Outsize Influence of Central American Orography on Global Climate

چکیده

Global Climate Models (GCMs) exhibit substantial biases in their simulation of tropical climate. One particularly problematic bias exists GCMs' the rainband known as Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Much precipitation on Earth falls within ITCZ, which plays a key role setting Earth's temperature by affecting global energy transports, and partially dictates dynamics largest interannual mode climate variability: The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Most GCMs fail to simulate mean state ITCZ correctly, often exhibiting “double bias,” with rainbands both north south rather than just equator. These limit confidence models' projected future paleoclimate states, reduce utility these models for understanding present dynamics. Adjusting GCM parameterizations cloud processes atmospheric convection can biases, artificially correcting sea surface temperatures through modifications air-sea fluxes (i.e., “flux adjustment”). Here, we argue that significant portion rainfall circulation are rooted orographic height being biased low due assumptions made fitting observed orography onto grids. We demonstrate making different, physically defensible, raise significantly improves model climatological features such North American well ENSO. findings suggest simple, based, computationally inexpensive method improve projections

Linking orography , climate , and exhumation across the central Andes

Quantifying interactions between uplift, climate, deformation, and exhumation remains diffi cult, in many cases due to a paucity of data relevant to all processes. We synthesize new and existing data to understand the orogen-scale orographic changes across the central Andes, Bolivia. We use a regional climate model and geo-thermochronologic data to identify the correlations between changes in p...

A Tropical Influence on Global Climate

A potential influence of tropical sea surface temperature on the global climate response to a doubling of the CO2 concentration is tested using an atmospheric general circulation model coupled to a slab mixed layer ocean. The warming is significantly reduced when sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific cold tongue region between latitudes 2.258N and 2.258S are held at the con...

Detection of a human influence on North American climate.

Several indices of large-scale patterns of surface temperature variation were used to investigate climate change in North America over the 20th century. The observed variability of these indices was simulated well by a number of climate models. Comparison of index trends in observations and model simulations shows that North American temperature changes from 1950 to 1999 were unlikely to be due...

The Influence of Orography on an East Coast Storm,

A high resolution, limited area version of the NCAR GCM is used to simulate the March 14, 1975 east coast storm. Based on climatological data, synoptic experience, and an examination of numerous cases, this cyclone was chosen because it seemed to have been strongly influenced by the Appalachian Mountains. The storm was investigated in detail and is briefly described. The NCAR GCM is also descri...

the influence of the neo-platonic concept of poetic imagination on wordsworth’s poetry
